Overview

Sell Your Film

Filmmaker's Video

What it takes to succeed in business.

(Video courtesy American Express Open Forum.)

Now you come to the last step of the process which is finding an audience for your movie. Somewhere there is an audience for every film, even if it's just your mother, but finding that audience and convincing them to watch--and pay--is the final great challenge for every filmmaker.

Build it and they will come doesn't apply in the picture business. Your potential audience is inundated by messages from all forms of entertainment offerings and you'll have to offer something special to get them to pick yours.

Buzz: Is the mystery ingredient X that can turn your micro-budget film into the next Blair Witch Project.

Festivals: Festivals can make or break an independent film. You have to learn how to work the festivals.

Markets: Sell your film to the other 2/3s of the world's audience. That's what markets are for.

Distribution means selling your film: The definition of distribution is changing every year as new ways of watching films keep getting invented.

Hollywood: A very strange world all unto its self-obsessed self.

Film Law: You absolutely need to understand some basic elements of law as it applies to the entertainment business if you hope to survive.
